Dr. Jason Marshall is the director of the TURI Labs at the UMASS Lowell campus. The Cleaning Laboratory tests the performance of both industrial and janitorial cleaning products to encourage companies, institutions, and product formulators to choose and develop safer substitutes. Whether you're a metal finishing company, product formulator, facility manager or any organization looking for safer cleaning products and processes, the TURI Laboratory can help.

The Cleaning Laboratory's mission since its inception in 1994, is to focus on cleaning methods and chemistries to evaluate the effectiveness of different cleaners and equipment for a variety of substrates and soils.

EPA's Design for Environment, now Safer Choice, recognized the Cleaning Laboratory's work by designating the Laboratory as a champion in its Safer Detergents Initiative.

How They Do It

The Cleaning Laboratory uses standardized testing procedures for testing both industrial cleaning and janitorial cleaning products. We work with your existing conditions -- substrates, soils, contaminants, and cleaning equipment, in the lab and at your site. We offer performance validation testing for label certifications such as Green Seal or government purchasing programs. And, we can work with your product to identify an effective alternative formulation when necessary to fully meet the green certification that you seek.

We provide onsite piloting with your equipment and your staff to make sure that the product and the process work well together.

Search their CleanerSolutions Database for performance data on thousands of cleaning products.

Today’s freebie is two handouts about the TURI Labs and their work. You can click here to get them downloaded to you.

While attending the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago this spring, I was lucky enough to meet and interview Chef Rick Bayless.

Most people know Rick from winning the title of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, beating out the French and Italian with his authentic Mexican cuisine. His highly rated Public Television Series,Mexico–One Plate at a Time, has wrapped its 11th season and is broadcast coast to coast. In 2012, Rick was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for Best Culinary Host.

Rick has nine cookbooks. His second book, Mexican Kitchen, won the Julia Child IACP cookbook of the year award in 1996, and his fourth book, Mexico–One Plate at a Time won James Beard Best International Cookbook of the Year award in 2001. Fiesta at Rick’s spent a number of weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Rick’s side by side award-winning restaurants are in Chicago. The casual Frontera Grill was founded in 1987 and received the James Beard Foundation’s highest award, Outstanding Restaurant, in 2007. The 4-star Toplobampo served its first meals in 1991. And the wildly popular, LEED GOLD-certified, fast-casual Xoco has been around since 2009, serving wood-oven tortas, steaming caldos, golden churros and bean-to-cup Mexican hot chocolate. Rick’s quick-serviceTortas Frontera have changed the face of food service at O’Hare International Airport, whileFrontera Fresco has brought Frontera flavors to several Macy’s stores and Northwestern University. His award-winning Frontera line of salsas, cooking sauces and organic chips can be found coast to coast.

Rick and his staff established the Frontera Farmer Foundation in 2003 to support small Midwestern farms. Each year, grants are awarded to farmers for capital improvements to their family farms, encouraging greater production and profitability. To date, the Foundation has awarded nearly 200 grants totaling nearly $2 million. In 2007, Bayless and his team launched theFrontera Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship that sends a Mexican-American Chicago Public School student to Kendall College to study culinary arts. In 2007 Rick was awarded the Humanitarian of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals for his many philanthropic endeavors.

Our nonprofit organization provides America’s first comprehensive human health-focused certification for nontoxic products across store aisles, from baby to personal care to household and beyond. Our goal is to change the way products are made in this country to ultimately eliminate the use of toxic chemicals altogether. We make it easy for people to find and buy products made without known toxic chemicals, give companies a road map for making safe products, and make it easy for retailers to select products that aren’t known to cause harm.

MADE SAFE screens ingredients against our Toxicant Database of known harmful chemicals, which is made up of thousands of chemicals found on scientifically authoritative lists from organizations and agencies around the world.

We then go above and beyond to examine ingredients for bioaccumulation, persistence, and general and aquatic toxicity.

MADE SAFE™ screens ingredients in products for known:

  • Behavioral toxins
  • Carcinogens
  • Developmental toxins
  • Endocrine disruptors
  • Fire retardants
  • GMOs
  • Heavy metals
  • Neurotoxins
  • Pesticides / Insecticides / Herbicides
  • Reproductive toxins
  • Toxic solvents
  • Harmful VOCs
  • NONTOXIC CERTIFIED™ products have passed MADE SAFE and gone on to be lab-tested as a whole for known:
  • Behavioral toxins
  • Carcinogens
  • Developmental toxins
  • Endocrine disruptors
  • Fire retardants
  • Heavy metals
  • Neurotoxins
  • Pesticides / Insecticides / Herbicides
  • Reproductive toxins
  • Toxic solvents
  • Harmful VOCs
  • Nanoparticles

Amy Ziff, Founder and Executive Director Amy is a healthy living educator with a genetic predisposition to toxicity. She’s also mom to three young kids who share the same trait. Determined to make the world less toxic, Amy reached millions of parents and caregivers with her “buy better” advocacy campaigns. She blogs about the chemical world we live in on Amy Ziff’s NoTox Life, and prior to founding Nontoxic Certified, taught classes on living a nontoxic life and co-founded the Veritey Shop, a site comprised of safe, nontoxic products. Amy is changing the world for the healthier one product at a time, one person at a time, one home at a time.
